Dr. Upton Thomas III, MD – Oconomowoc, WI

Over the past 14 years, I have had the privilege of serving others by practicing medicine in my chosen specialty of psychiatry.

I am most fascinated by the changes I see in patients not just with psychotropic medications but with the combination of meds and psychodynamic psychotherapy, a lost art for many psychiatrists in these days of cookie cutter, conveyor belt medicine.

Under my ideal model in residential treatment for substance use disorders which can combine both psychotherapy and medication management, I have personally seen much better patient outcomes in terms of long-term sobriety.

At Rogers Behavioral Health, it is the relationship between the treatment team and the patient that heals. In a residential setting, there is the very strong support by the substance abuse counselors and the behavioral specialists as well as the residential counselor specialists that lead to very positive treatment outcomes. This type of 24 hour-7 days a week treatment changes lives over the span of 4 to 8 weeks.

Current Clinical Interests and Practice:

I am comfortable with the treatment of many mental disorders including depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, acute stress disorder, ADHD, eating disorders, seasonal affective disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, sleep disorders, and adjustment disorders. And lately my focus has been treatment of substance use disorders with comorbid conditions. Ideally this is addressed by a dual diagnosis program such as the Herrington Recovery Center at Rogers in Oconomowoc.
